Position Description

Medical Laboratory Technician/Scientist

Duties

  1. Read/understand all procedures pertaining to assigned duties
    • Collect, pick up and courier patient specimens
    • Register patients, accession specimens and process specimens
    • Perform laboratory testing on patient specimens
    • Review and release patient specimen test results
    • Perform regular maintenance on equipment as required
  2. Interact with patients and clients where needed to answer technical (not clinical) questions about laboratory testing and results
  3. Help ensure the laboratory is in compliance with all Washington State CLIA regulations
    • Participate in proficiency testing (PT) events
    • Ensure training and competency is documented and up-to-date
    • Participate in the Quality Assurance (QA) program
    • Ensure quality control (QC) is performed and acceptable for each test run including patient test results
    • Ensure the safety and biosafety of the laboratory during your shift
    • Ensure temperatures are checked and other housekeeping duties are performed and documented as required
  4. Participate in the inventory management program
    • Ensure that all supplies and reagents are utilized within expiration dates
    • Notify the supervisor when supplies or reagents are getting low
    • Notify the supervisor if any other issues with supplies or reagents are encountered

Qualifications

  1. Required
    • Certified as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) or Clinical/Medical Laboratory Scientist or Medical Technologist (CLS, MLS or MT)
    • At least one year experience working in a clinical testing laboratory
  2. Preferred
    • At least two years experience working in a clinical testing laboratory, performing molecular diagnostics
    • Experience with next-generation sequencing (NGS) methodologies
